Exploring An Abandoned Fertilizer Facility

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Studio 6 photography

Its been a while since i wrote something on here for you folks.

Recently a mate of mine and I had a catchup after a few months and we both are photographers. Trust me whatever we talk about, the conversation always ends up about photography. I always had an idea to explore abandoned buildings. The light in a building like that is pretty amazing and very interesting. After a few minutes of floating the idea around and thinking of where we can go we came up to a solution. We knew of this old Fertilizer Storage facility which hadn’t been in operation for the past 35 years ( I think ).

Actually when i really think about it we came up with a few names and jotted them down but this Fertilizer Storage facility was the most interesting.

Saturday started with me and Ross (My mate) driving around and just scouting a few of the locations we had jotted down previously. After a few failed attempts at locating our targets we finally reached the Fertilizer Storage Facility. Saw the building from the outside and called appropriate people to arrange our entry into the building. Yes we TRY doing everything legally. Are you guys judging me? NO , we always do things the legal way because you never know what sort of hazards any place can have and we like to be safe. Rather be safe then sorry, what say? after everything was arranged we both went to our homes for the night.

Sunday was exciting! Well very exciting for me. Got up early morning and quickly did my chores at home ( Happy wife means happy life ) After all the boring stuff done,  got out of the house and picked Ross up. Headed to the Facility and then…

Its sad to see a big place like this being wasted and being tagged. This place carried so much history with it and i just loved the way lights finds it way inside the building through cracks and decaying roofing. creates a very interesting environment.

This photo is one of my favorites as its dark all around and light enters through the grimy window and lights up the corner. When you see a place like this, all sorts of creative modelling photoshoot ideas start to overcrowd your mind.

The top two photos are of the office area, where a clerk would sit and weigh all the fertilizer that would be going into trucks for delivery.

This is another favorite. Its magical the way light from the opaque roof falls into the corner. Its almost like a spotlight lit from above.

This natural deterioration has occurred through years of  facing extreme weather conditions.

These two top photos are of the extensive belt system of the Facility. this system was used by the facility to get fertilizer from bins and transport it to the ships which would be anchored in the harbor. It was kind of hard to get these two particular shots as we had to climb through a small hole in the door to get into the tunnel like structure. the left photo is of the belt system going up into the ceiling of the facility.  The left photo is of the system at ground level.

Overall it was an amazing Sunday. Loved exploring this building and ooooohhhhh i have got some cool ideas in my head to do a creative model shoot in this place. Just need the right conditions. most probably in a few weeks time. If you guys do have some ideas in your head let me know through comments. Love to hear other people ideas on this.

OK Folks thats all for today. Hope i can write more often ( yeah i know i am a bit boring ). Have a blessed week ahead. Don’t forget to take a few shots of your surrounding because memories need to be created on a regular basis.
